A Friesian Timeline
The love of horses runs in our family. My Grandmother “Totty” and her cousin “Toody”, myself, and now my daughters Vicki and Cindy; we all have been captivated by these magnificent animals and their influence on our lives. It is a unique bond and comradery that touches your heart and soul.
I have always recognized the importance of books in a child’s life and while shopping one day, five-year-old Vicki spotted a book with a striking black horse on the front cover. “Mummy, Mummy look at that book! Can we buy that book, pleeease”. We still have that book today, The Encyclopedia of the Horse, and this was our introduction to the Friesian. Vicki said that one day she was going to own one of those horses.
A few years later, a small article in the original GaitPost magazine featured a gentleman with his Friesian horses, who always welcomed visitors. Without hesitation, we called Mr. Len Stulp who cheerily invited us to his farm and sign his visitors book. Vicki, Cindy, and I travelled almost one hour to see Mr. Stulp, and the expressions of absolute joy on the faces of those children is something that I will be able to see for the rest of my life. All too soon, Mr. Stulp had passed away, but the impression had been made upon us and we were resolved to one day own a Friesian horse.
Nearly 15 years later we were in a position to purchase a young filly and after much research and several farm visits, decided it had to be Oege for us. We found an Oege grand-daughter, Klaske fan Nicomen (Remmelt x Lukas), bred by Art and Adie Postma and knew from the first time we saw her that she was going to be our Friesian.
Klaske has grown with our family, foaled a beautiful colt by Winand 405, and at present is continuing her training in dressage. Cindy schooled the basic dressage and Vicki will work with Klaske further, her goal to show this spring. See you in the ring and always have fun!
Enjoy the photographs; as you can see the Friesian horse captivates those of all ages, from pre-school to Toody at 98 years young!
All the best,
Annette, Vicki, and Cindy Fleming
